Gaiwan (Tureen) is a tea device with cover on the top, tray on the bottom, and bowl in the middle. Cover, bowl, and tray are symbols of Heaven, Earth, and Go so the tureen, also known as the three powers bowl, three-power cup. Gaiwan simply translates to “Lidded Bowl” or “Lidded Cup” depending on how you write it.


A Gaiwan normally comes with a cup, a saucer and a lid. The tea is brewed within the cup and is then either drunk directly from the Gawain or poured into a separate cup. Gaiwan is a very important tea set in the study of tea, also used as a teapot. So many beginners will learn how to brew with a Gaiwan. And Gaiwan or Zhong is primarily used for infusion of tea leaves and tea consumption.


A gaiwan (or guywan with Wade-Giles romanization) is actually a pretty simple little contraption. It can be made from pretty much anything except metal (which would absorb far too much heat), such as glass, porcelain, or clay. The original form model of the gaiwan was invented as a cup. It is unclear as to the history of its development but we can find traces in paintings and writings of the past.


The gaiwan , a brewing invention dating back to the Ming Dynasty, is a basic lidded cup, typically made from porcelain but also available in glass and even clay. An unassuming little teapot, it sits on its base humbly awaiting spoonfuls of tea. The most commonly used ones are the ones made of porcelain and glass.


The Gaiwan teapot set comes in various materials. On the other han tea enthusiasts and collectors prize the one made of yixing clay and jade. Typically, they are small in size and has a volume of approximately 1ml.

Finally, gaiwans are usually made of glazed porcelain, and are thus flavor neutral. We always recommend tasting a new tea in a gaiwan to get a true measure of it’s flavor and quality. The traditional method of using a gaiwan can be tricky for beginners.


This classic white gaiwan consists of three parts: A saucer, bowl, and lid which fits just inside the top of the bowl. Tea leaves are put inside the bowl and hot water is added.
